Beginning in 1984, SCCA racing driver and American entrepreneur Steve Saleen made his name as a tuner of Ford Mustangs for the street and the track. He and his shop Saleen Automotive Inc. took his Mustang racing knowledge and translated it to chassis and engine upgrades that propelled his ponies to the top step of the podium, even taking a few race-prepared SN-95 (fourth-generation, 1994ā2004) Mustangs to run the 24 Hour of Le Mans in 1997. At the same time, Saleenās road-going treatment of the SN-95 arrived in the form of the Mustang GT-based S-281 and the monstrous S351 in 1994. The latter featured the largest engine in a Mustang since 1973, with Saleen fitting a 351 cu-in V8 based on the iconic 351 Windsor. Numerous performance upgrades including aluminum cylinder heads, hydraulic roller camshaft and lifters, 65 mm throttle body, and ceramic coated headers boosted its output to a staggering 370 horsepower. The Saleen treatment also introduced a host of chassis improvements to contain its tire-smoking power, with Saleen/Racecraft struts and shocks, Racecraft variable rate springs, a Saleen/Racecraft front sway bar, and much more.
The accompanying Ford window sticker shows that this Saleen Mustang S351 started life as a five-speed Mustang GT Convertible finished in Canary Yellow with a Black cloth interior and Black soft top, and was shipped through David Wilsonās Ford of Orange in Orange, California. The car was then modified to Saleen Mustang S351 specifications at Saleenās facilities in Southern California before being delivered new to George Foreman in March 1995 via Mac Haik Ford in Houston, Texas.
